Comments

SNEEP Comments give the community of repository users a facility to discuss the items within that repository directly within the context of the Eprints's item page. Each and every item can be commented on and those comments viewed by any logged-in user (though Admins and Eprint owners may disallow comments on particular Eprints).

Comments might be used, for example, to record opinions, or to provide space for informal peer review. Comments allow the item metadata record to become a dynamic description that will change according to the reponse of the repository community over time. Though managed separately from core metadata, It will be possible for comments to be like any other piece of metadata so that they will be properly associated with an item and exportable.

Bookmarks

SNEEP Bookmarks are for keeping track of individual items that a given user finds interesting. They allow a user to easily build up a portfolio of items that they can refer back to. The functionality is similar to that of Eprints Saved Searches, and the user's bookmark list will link to the Eprints bookmarked, and show thumbnail/citation. Bookmarks are set from a button/link on the Eprint page.

Users may still, of course, bookmark objects with their web browser or online bookmarking system (Del.icio.us, etc), but in large repositories (or meta-repositories) there are likely to be advantages to maintaining a set of bookmarks within a repository user's account. Particularly image-oriented repositories, such as the Linnean Online collection.

Tags

SNEEP Tags allow users to tag an Eprint with one or more keywords they feel is relevant to that item. In time 'folksonomy' is built up which represents a new layer of categorisation based on the input and collaboration of a repository community.

The tagging interface will be offered to logged in users within the item abstract page in as simple and non-invasive manner as possible. (In effect, the will be setting a bookmark and associating tags with that. There will then be a number of methods for accessing repository content using tags:

  • Tag Search
  • Tag Cloud
  • Alphabetical browsing
  • Tag association (find the tags most commonly associated with any given tag)
  • something else...?

Notes

We should add that we propose to implement Notes as a subset of comments. Notes will be purely private to the Registered User, and not visible to any other user (or administrator?).
